Water influence on the kinetics of transesterification using CaO catalyst to produce biodiesel

This research investigated the water influence on biodiesel production via transesterification, and especially their kinetic parameters. The initial rate of transesterification was increased with increasing amount (0–5 wt%). On contrary, significantly reduced for concentration 8–15 wt%. Moreover, when yield reached maximum value 30–40%, saponification as a side reaction became more significant presence emulsion phase, resulting in remarkable decrease yield. simple model including constant apparent activation energy revealed that containing 5 wt% gave higher compared to case absence water. However, could not describe high content. effect should be accounted adsorption term. modified Langmuir-Hinshelwood effects contamination originally proposed. Our finding suggested despite small content using CaO catalyst giving rise rate, feedstocks avoided because notable saponification.
